Telephone Scam Impersonating the Irish League of Credit Unions
Please be vigilant if you receive an unexpected phone call claiming to be from the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU) or another trusted organisation.
A telephone scam has been reported in which a caller impersonated a representative of the ILCU, claiming that unusual activity had been detected on a credit union member’s account.
During the call, the member was asked to provide their name and member number. The caller then requested the member’s PIN. Recognising this as suspicious, the member ended the call.
The incoming call displayed the number +353 (1) 946 1762. Please be aware that fraudsters may use false identities and telephone numbers to appear legitimate.
How to Recognise a Scam
Fraudsters may:
Pretend to be calling from your credit union, the ILCU or another trusted organisation.
Claim that unusual activity has been detected on your account.
Use a name or professional-sounding identity to gain your trust.
Create a sense of urgency to pressure you into sharing confidential information.
Ask for your PIN, password or one-time security code.
How to Protect Yourself
Never share your PIN. Your credit union will never ask you to disclose your PIN, password or one-time security codes over the phone. Never share these details with anyone, regardless of who they claim to represent.
Be cautious of unexpected calls. If someone contacts you unexpectedly about your account or suspicious transactions, do not disclose personal or security information.
Verify the caller independently. End the call and contact Blackrock Credit Union directly using a verified telephone number or contact details from our official website. Do not rely solely on the number displayed on your phone or the identity given by the caller.
Report suspicious calls. If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from your credit union or the ILCU, please contact us.
What Should You Do If You Have Shared Your Details?
If you have disclosed your PIN, password, one-time code or other security information, contact Blackrock Credit Union immediately so that we can advise you on the steps needed to protect your account.
If you believe you have lost money to a scam, contact your credit union and your bank, where relevant, as soon as possible.
Stay alert. Stay safe. Protect your personal information.
Blackrock Credit Union will never ask you to reveal your PIN or confidential security credentials over the phone.
